Air conditioning 2.0 – CO2 and the next wave of vehicle refrigerants

Carbon dioxide (CO2) has a great deal of potential as a refrigerant. Some argue that the use of CO2 in passenger vehicle air conditioning alone could help reduce harmful CO2 emissions worldwide and may actually be cheaper to manufacture and maintain in the long run.

Others disagree, citing the use of CO2 technologies as being less cost-effective than other refrigerants. The use of CO2 as the next wave of vehicle refrigerants is an area of intense debate, being dubbed the ‘Cool War’.

Whatever side of the debate you fall on, the next wave of vehicle air conditioning systems are arriving, and – though it may not appear the main selling point for many – the use of CO2 in new air conditioning systems will be one of the most important features of new vehicles now and in the coming years.
