In Upstate New York, where the Hudson and Mohawk River Valleys meet, is a region once known for its powerful mills and flourishing textile industry. These businesses, along with the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at the University of Albany (CNSE) (cnse.albany.edu) and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) (nyserda.ny.gov), are working on superconducting and quantum computing, magnetic resonance imaging, utility-scale power, cryogenic refrigeration, power electronics, and more.
CryoGas International was invited to attend the recent New York State Superconductor Technology Summit, held May 6–7 at CNSE. Modern High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) provide important advantages— energy efficiency, high engineering current density, reduced size and weight, environmental friendliness—over copperbased systems for applications in energy technologies including renewables, healthcare, industry, transportation, military, space, science, and research (SuperPower, Inc., superpower.com).
The first day of the Superconductor Technology Summit consisted of tours of local facilities working on superconductor applications. On the second day, speakers came to CNSE and discussed topics such as materials, computing, and applications in medical, military, aerospace, and especially utility power.
