While all the talk in Europe is about the scaling down of high Global Warming Potential (GWP) hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), the developing world, which includes China and India, has only just begun a phase out of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).

This will be a slow process for many and in China it is unlikely to be completed until 2040.

This is the final date as required under the Montreal Protocol. From 2030 until 2040 the limit for HCFCs will only be 0.5% of each country’s initial baseline and for use in servicing equipment only. China, and many other developing countries, are today still installing new equipment using HCFCs. As such, the bank of equipment running and requiring servicing on HCFC refrigerants is still growing in these regions, although at a slower rate as they adopt newer technology, but it will still require servicing for some time into the future.
