Nothing is more exciting than the privilege of helping a new, aggressive rep start his career in outside sales, but it’s a bit like watching a “bull in the china shop.”
The hard-hitting apprentice is knocking on new doors before completing requests from the previous prospect and is often too quick to respond to customer needs. He taxes the company’s inside support team with persistent requests. He is the Energizer Bunny! His enthusiasm is contagious and his openness to learn new skills is impressive.
In contrast, I also have the pleasure of mentoring seasoned, skilled professionals, some of whom have hit-the-wall with stress from taking on too many qualified opportunities. These specialists have succeeded in their careers, but limit their future potential when they become preoccupied with the “tyranny of the urgent.”
