GAWDA Gives Back
Jenny McCall, President of GAWDA, and her husband Chris, have chosen the Children and Family Service’s (CFS) Community Closet program in Maui to be the recipient of this year’s GAWDA Gives Back award. The tradition of giving back to the community in which GAWDA holds its annual convention is now in its 10th year. (See “The Trend in Giving Back,” CGI, November 2009, p.10.)
The Community Closet is one of 30 programs run by Child and Family Service (CFS), Hawaii’s oldest and largest private, nonprofit human services provider. CFS’s mission is “strengthening families and fostering the healthy development of children.” The organization is known for its services for those in need, including children and spouses, at-risk teenagers, and the elderly. The group has a philosophy of care that focuses on client strengths and working with other agencies to provide better services for the people of Hawaii.

The Community Closet program on Maui was started in March 2009 when staff members recognized that many families were struggling to provide essentials for their babies. Can you imagine your newborn baby having to go without formula or diapers? CFS and its Community Closet program bring hope and health to some of Maui’s most disadvantaged families. Through our donation, we can provide food, clothing, blankets, car seats, and basic baby care items that no child can live without.
