Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a vital revenue stream for all companies involved in its production and distribution. Aside from its main uses within the food and beverage sector, CO2 has a wide range of more niche applications ranging from the management of pH levels in swimming pools and water treatment plants, to aiding the increase of crop production in greenhouses.
In the US, sales related to the merchant CO2 business amounted to an estimated $2.5bn in 2016, accounting for around 13% of the total industrial gas market. This includes deliveries of bulk liquid CO2 (LCO2) for customers demanding higher quantities, microbulk and liquid cylinders for clients of a medium consumption level, and cylinders and cylinder bundles for customers who have a lower volume requirement. gasworld Business Intelligence’s estimates for the merchant CO2 business also include sales of dry ice – CO2 in its solid form – which is chiefly used in a number chilling/freezing applications.
